Kontron introduces containerized video transcoding PoC using Kubernetes and Docker at IBC 2017

New ability for ISV transcoding vendors to run video workloads on containerized graphics engines

Montreal, Canada, September 14, 2017 – Kontron, a global provider of cloud and carrier-class integrated infrastructure platforms, today announced it will showcase a technical proof of concept that runs containerized video transcoding workloads on Intel® Xeon® processors with integrated Iris® Pro graphics at IBC 2017.

This PoC demonstrates that transcoding ISV vendors already using the Intel® Media Studio Server development suite to run their video processing applications on the Intel Xeon Processor E3 family with integrated Iris Pro graphics can now look to replicate their solutions with lightweight, scalable Docker containers and Kubernetes for container orchestration.

This is the first example of integrated x86 processor–enabled graphics being ‘containerized’ for video transcoding. This allows service providers to deploy efficient and agile transcoding HD/UHD workloads and consume significantly fewer resources, since concurrent applications can run on the CPU portion of the processor that is unused by graphics processing applications.

The demo is running on Kontron SYMKLOUD hardware, featuring the MS2910 converged infrastructure platform that provides up to 70% in OPEX power & rack space savings versus other 1U commodity servers. Each platform supports 10GbE switching to nine MSP8050 modular server nodes, each built with two independent Intel Xeon processor E3-1578L v5 with integrated Iris Pro graphics P580. This low-power, high density processor allows 18 processors with integrated graphics to be deployed in a 2U enclosure and support up to 5,670 video streams (AVC – HEVC 1080p30) per 42U rack.
