Kontron completes cloud solutions with turnkey Kubernetes-Docker Platform

Service providers and enterprises can leverage Kontron cloud solution portfolio of fully integrated ‘out-of-the-box’ platforms of Openstack VMs, Bare Metal and Containers

Montreal, CANADA, February 21, 2018 – Kontron, a global provider of open source cloud and integrated infrastructure platforms, today launched the first in a series of turnkey container solutions based on the Canonical Distribution of Kubernetes that is fully integrated by Kontron on its SYMKLOUD converged hardware.

This completes the SYMKLOUD family of open source cloud provisioning solutions that are ideal for:

  • Enterprises who build their own private clouds across various industries, and;
  • CDN, cable, cloud and telco service providers seeking to virtualize and/or containerize services either at the edge or the central office.

This latest open source integration with SYMKLOUD hardware is well timed for service providers seeking scalable and cost-efficient microservice deployments at the network edge. Containers simplify how edge services are rolled out, terminated, or simply moved to entirely new application environments.

Whether combined with Kontron Openstack cloud provisioning or not, operators have multiple options to mix and match various frameworks to build container clusters that serve any number of multi-access edge computing use cases. This includes anything for Smart Cities, AR and real-time video analytics, video delivery optimization, Blockchain-based services, and automated enterprise services.

“Our goal is simple. By integrating Canonical-based open source cloud orchestration with our SYMKLOUD converged hardware we make life substantially easier for service providers and anyone building private clouds,” said Benoit Robert, VP Strategy and Marketing, Kontron. “We have eliminated the integration headaches to ensure a faster set up of cloud environments, whether using OpenStack VMs, Bare Metal, or containers via Kubernetes and Docker.”

The Canonical approach to Kubernetes is comprehensive and focuses on the latest container capabilities in modern kernels. By extension, Kontron ensures that its SYMKLOUD Kubernetes Platform replicates the work done by Canonical to ensure Kubernetes is secure, easy to deploy, operate, and upgrade.

Kontron also choose to integrate the Canonical Distribution of Kubernetes because it is GPU and CUDA ready. This means any GPU components can be detected, configured and made easily composable in SYMKLOUD hardware. This opens up numerous opportunities for service providers to generate new revenues from intelligent services derived from edge-related GPU machine learning, AI and transcoding services.

“Kontron bundles Ubuntu and the Canonical Distribution of Kubernetes onto a single MAAS/Juju deployer node with three redundant Kubernetes controller nodes and five Kubernetes worker nodes,” said Dustin Kirkland, Vice President of Product, Canonical. “This level of tight integration makes microservices at the edge extremely efficient and maximizes the computing throughput of the hardware.”
