Kontron and Anevia showcase high-density, low-cost transcoder for 4K OTT video delivery at IBC 2018
New reference demonstration to boost 4K transcoding performance for broadcasters and OTT
service providers using NVIDIA Tesla P4 GPU module
Montreal, CANADA, September 14, 2018 – Kontron, a global provider of cloud and carrier-class integrated infrastructure platforms, and Anevia, a leading OTT and IPTV software provider, today announced that they will demonstrate a high-density, cost-efficient reference solution for 4K video transcoding use cases.
From the Kontron booth during IBC Show, in Amsterdam from September 14 – 18, 2018, the two companies will show a live demo to broadcasters and content service providers of Anevia’s Genova Live video transcoding software running on NVIDIA GPU-based nodes configured on the high density SYMKLOUD MS2900 Series platform. This unlocks a new level of achieving a much lower cost per stream for compute intensive 4K workloads.
Genova Live software video encoder delivers broadcast video quality for AVC (H.264) and HEVC (H.265) formats and supports SD, HD up to UHD/4K resolutions, including HDR. It runs on COTS servers and leverages hardware acceleration when available on the platform.
The pressure for operators to package and deliver 4K and UHD video in a multitude of formats to various independent devices is an ongoing industry challenge. The Kontron and Anevia recipe addresses this and enables operators to deliver 4K HDR 10-bit distribution much more cost effectively and at a lower total cost of ownership.
Genova Live transcoding software can run on Kontron’s SYMKLOUD MS29xx 2RU platform which combines storage, compute and redundant network switches. The MS2900 platform can support up to 9 hot swappable MSP8040 modular servers that incorporate hardware components for video transcoding such as NVIDIA GPUs via PCIe expansion slots. Each modular server sled contains a single Intel Xeon-D processor and one NVIDIA Tesla P4 graphics processor for best in class 4K video workload performance per watt.
The result is the MS2900 architecture can support up to 9 input 4K streams at 60fps 10-bit HDR, for unparalleled density from a single 2RU platform. The number of multi-resolution ABR output streams can be easily determined and adapted to the available bandwidth. All of this translates to a reduction of the cost per stream by up to 3 times, when compared to other servers.
“This new transcoding reference for 4K resolution demonstrates our level of commitment to rewrite portions of our software to run on NVIDIA graphics processors, thus improving the performance for OTT video transcoding,” says Jerome Blanc, EVP Compression Products at Anevia. “Our mutual customers can use Genova Live transcoding software on Kontron’s high-density architecture to implement a complete OTT video transcoding solution while reducing their operational costs.”
“Benefits of this collaboration include more video streams per 2U, better watts per stream ratio and fewer servers needed, resulting in lower TCO for the operator,” explains Benoit Robert, VP Strategy and Marketing, Kontron Communications Business. “At the end of the day, working with invaluable transcoding software vendors like Anevia to build a customized solution for their operator customers is what we are all about.”
