Clearly much has transpired in the last few years to shake up the telecom industry. There are two currents whereby operators are being challenged to transition from purely physical infrastructure elements to a more virtual set-up using standard IT hardware and, ideally, across a newly software-defined network.

A large portion of Kontron’s history is derived from long years of telecom experience designing commercial-off-the-shelf hardware used for carrier grade networks. While the requirements for all-things carrier grade have not disappeared, the new cloud-based technologies to achieve them have been turned upside down.

SDN/NFV

The end game for communication service providers (CSPs) around the world is to find the best business cases to leverage software defined networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) as a means to achieve a state of absolute flexibility to roll-out new services, and consequently new revenues, much more quickly.

The means to achieve these ends have so far been varied and not always consistent among CSPs, even with all the work produced by an assortment of vendor ecosystems and standards groups. For Kontron, its mission continues to be one of helping CSPs find the right mix of hardware and software components that will work best for their infrastructure needs – for both legacy and transitioning SDN/NFV deployments.

OPENSTACK CLOUD OS and NFVi

At the crux of NFV infrastructure is the integration of OpenStack as a means to provision your VNFs/Services across deployed virtual machines. As a Foundation Sponsor, Kontron has tested its hardware with solutions provided by key OpenStack distribution vendors including Canonical (Ubuntu), CentOS, Red Hat, Wind River (Titanium), among others.

This has helped launch any number of reference solutions or Use Cases developed by Kontron and its VNF partners. These run the gamut from Session Border Controllers (vSBC), Policy and Charging Control (vPCC) to video delivery and DPI/security. And, there are more to come.

CENGEN – OPNFV PHAROS LAB

No one vendor can do it alone, which is why Kontron is involved with an increasing number of ISVs who already have productized their applications into Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) and with various standards projects such as OPNFV.
At the Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN) in Ottawa, Canada, Kontron participated in its efforts to open a new Pharos Lab in conjunction with the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) group. [Check out OPNFV Wiki]

Currently running the Brahmaputra Release NFVi deployment with JOID (Juju OPNFV Infrastructure Deployer), this pod is set-up using Kontron hardware (SYMKLOUD MS2910) and supplies developers with an abundance of resources for early testing within realistic NFV environments via an open, consistent, repeatable test domain. This ensures OPNFV can be applicable across architectures, environments and vendors. The Pharos Project itself includes 11 existing member company labs spanning North America, Europe and Asia.
